Winter Open Call: 🌱 Roots & Routes

About

Winter Artist Open Call

Artists are invited to reflect on their own “roots”, heritage, poetic of identity, relational memory, personal or collective histories, while also exploring their “routes”, journeys, displacements, new experiments, evolving practices, and the paths we take when the ground shifts beneath us

What's happening

About The Vault

Built from the urgency and creative spirit of Brighton & Hove’s independent art scene, The Vault is Mid Street Lab’s newest exhibition space — a seafront home for local creativity, collectable art, and experimental practice.

This winter, we’re opening our doors for our first Artist Open House by the sea, bringing together established and emerging voices in a curated, community-powered showcase.

The Opportunity

We’re inviting up to 20 artists to take part in The Vault Winter Open House — a curated exhibition celebrating accessible, collectable, and original works from Brighton & Hove’s vibrant creative community.

Artists will be selected based on the quality, coherence, and presentation of their work, ensuring a professional yet inclusive show where every participant shines.

👉 Artists are also welcome to present a selection of smaller-scale works for display and sale. These might include artist cards, limited-edition prints, or specially created gift editions. These works should be conceived as an extension of the artist’s practice and may include collectable craft.

Participation & Contribution Standards

To keep the space open and artist-led, each selected artist will be asked to contributes £75, which directly supports exhibition costs (space, insurance, promotion, opening events, and staffing).

What’s included:

  • All week open exhibition with free admission (usually closed Tuesday and Wednesday)
  • A dedicated display area of approximately 1.2 linear metres of wall space or floor space (for 3D artworks), curated for balance and visibility.
  • Guaranteed 10–15cm gaps between works for clean presentation and sales impact.
  • Inclusion in press and Discover Magazine listing, plus Mid Street Lab’s social and newsletter campaigns.
  • Private View event and full exhibition promotion, including open nights and private views
  • On-site invigilation and handling of sales (20% commission).

⚙️ More options

  • Standard allocation, 1.2m, £75, suggested use 2-4 medium works
  • Large allocation, 1.2m to 2m, £150, suggested use installation or large collection
