About

Still Making: Those Who Don't Do, Teach"

Still Making is an exhibition born from a simple but powerful truth: teaching is an act of creativity, yet many art educators are rarely seen as artists in their own right. Led by Rachel Benjamin, Artist and Director of WachArt CIC, the project emerges from her own return to practice, from exhibiting at Mid Street Lab to rebuilding confidence, showing work in London, and stepping into leadership within a values-led arts organisation. Still Making gathers educators who continue to create in the margins of busy lives — between classrooms, care, marking, paid work and community commitments. Some make daily. Some return when they can. All are still artists. This is not an open call but a collaboration: a shared space to be visible, to reconnect with practice, and to honour the cultural labour educators carry. Still Making celebrates the quiet persistence, resilience, and imagination that sustain both teaching and art — and invites those who live between the two to step forward, together.

What's happening

Still Making will run from 15 March to 15 April 2026 at The Vault – Brighton Contemporary Art, our seafront gallery dedicated to emerging voices and creative citizens. The exhibition coincides with UNESCO World Art Day, creating a timely moment to honour the artists shaping culture inside and beyond the classroom. The show will bring together up to 40 art educators, presenting a diverse range of practices developed alongside teaching, community work, and everyday life. Expect an evolving exhibition supported by talks, gatherings, and moments of exchange throughout the month.
