About

Marije Brom: REST IS A REVOLUTION / JOY IS A SCAR

Born in the Netherlands and having lived across the globe, I made my home in Brighton in 1996. My early career began in law, working as an employment lawyer in the City before a series of chronic illnesses - including Lupus, Sjogrens disease, epilepsy and later Complex - PTSD led me to redefine my path. Though my legal career was cut short, I remained engaged in meaningful work including amongst many working for the Ethics Committee at Brighton Sussex Medical School (BSMS) and now serving as a Patient Educator to the Junior Doctors at BSMS. Art has been my a constant companion throughout this journey. What began as a therapeutic practice has grown into a vital means of expression and healing.

About the Exhibition

This body of work is an abstract visual response to Complex PTSD, abuse, and chronic illness — and the quiet, often invisible process of healing. Each piece offers a layered, emotional landscape where texture, form, and colour speak in place of words.

Marije Brom invites viewers to bear witness, not to fix. This is not a therapeutic space — but a deeply human one. Her work honours the unspoken and offers space for those rising through the shadows of trauma.
